The Experimental High Energy Physics in Latin America

The Latin America since ten years ago cultivates the experimental high energy physics. The practice is concentrated in Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina. Personnel form Chile, Colombia, Venezuela, Guatemala, Perú, Bolivia, Ecuador, Paraguay, and Puerto Rico, participates actively in the experimental high energy physics. This practice is done outside the respective countries. And contributes nothing to the development of the country.

There is no statistics of the persons from Latin America that work outside his or her native country in high energy physics. These people works in the laboratories of Europe and Uniteddd States.

The practice in Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina of the experimental high energy physics in centered in collaborations with groups of United States and Europe.

In Mexico, ten year collaboration have not been enough to develop completely the first generation of physicists dedicated to the high energy physics.

A decade is not enough to develop an area of the physics. United States has more than eleven decades cultivating the physics. And practices the experimental high energy physics since the beginning of it. The USA has developed, in a good part, the experimental high energy physics through the last seven decades.

There are some versions of how the experimental high energy physics was originated in Latin America. Maybe each version is a separate intent. Then, all of them are truthful. The true is that personnel from Latin America always have participated in the international scientific activities. In all areas and along the history of Latin America. In special the physicists. The XX century was no the exception.

The first countries that untented participate in experimental high energy physics were Mexico and Brazil, followed by Argentina and Colombia. At first, as users of the big laboratories like Fermilab, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and CERN. The efforts have been isolated. They never have fruited.

In facilities and in organization, Brazil and Argentina have the lead. Mexico is running in the back.

Brazil has experience constructing accelerators. The project to construct a national laboratory of synchroton light began in the decade of 1980. Actually it runs in Campinas, Brazil. According to the designers it required of the local industry organization, of the international cooperation, and of the planning of the national laboratory. Of accelerator engineering, general engineering, materials science, and of interdisciplinary sciences. The most imminent problems were the lack of trained people to perform the planning, the design, the construction, the assembly, and the run of the electron accelerator. All that knowledge they got from across the border. They repatriated qualified Brazilians and they trained personnel. They succeeded in building the national laboratory that now operates. It took to them close to 20 years. It is a multidisciplinary laboratory. Participate many Brazilian universities in different projects on materials, solid state physics, etc.

Argentina has started the construction and the operation of the South Cosmic Rays Observatory, Pierre Auger, at Mendoza. Although more specialized than the Brazilian source of synchroton radiation, it will serve to conglomerate the Argentinians around a common project and learn how to run big accelerators. They are working in common projects of computational physics, electronics, optics, etc. with international participation.

The Latin American institutions that work in experimental high energy physics are: Universidad federal de Río de Janeiro, Brazil; Centro brasileño de Investigaciones físicas, Río de Janeiro, Brazil; Universidad federal de Paraiba, Brazil; Universidad de Sao Paulo, Brazil; Universidad de Campinas, Brazil; Universidad nacional de los Andes, Colombia. Universidad de la Plata, Argentina. Cinvestav, Mexico; Universidad autónoma de San Luis Potosí, Mexico; Universidad de San Nicolás de Hidalgo, Mexico; IFUG, Universidad de Guanajuato, Mexico; Universidad autónoma de Puebla, Mexico.

The above institutions were taken from the respective www pages. It is possible that there are others.
